Resin, Elastic
At the beginning of the pandemic in the United States, wearing a mask felt fraught. With family living in Taiwan, so near to the origin of the outbreak, I had a preview of what the disease would bring when it inevitably came to the US. But as an Asian person, it seemed that a small piece of cloth had the potential to incite fear, anger and racism in our deeply divided country. As time has passed, the mask has become more widely used, but it has also provoked many questions in our society: is wearing a mask an issue of personal freedom, or is it an issue of protection? Like the resin this sculpture is made of, opinions on this innocuous object have continued to harden.
